A Policy Maker’s View on the Trump AI Action Plan and Executive Orders

It is perhaps only in DC that the busyness of days can be defined by the release of a policy document on artificial intelligence (AI). Rumors were circulating for days before, but on a sunny and shockingly not humid July day in DC, the much anticipated AI Action Plan appeared on the White House’s website. For those watching, the last few weeks and months have been full of AI news from the January announcement of the Stargate investment to the release of a new Chinese AI model from Moonshot AI. Sandwiched between those announcements was the drama over the passing of the One Big Beautiful Bill during which Senators chose to remove a proposed 10-year moratorium on AI regulation by states. Not to mention the reversal of a previous policy on the export of powerful semiconductors to China. Then came the AI Action Plan.

Hours after its signing, President Trump uncapped his Sharpie and inked his signature to three new executive orders.
