Ever heard of Waxahachie, Texas? Maybe if you’re from Texas, but then again, Texas is a big place. Maybe you are from Waxahachie in which case, please leave a comment.
Waxahachie, Texas is south of Dallas and was once to be the site of a monumental project for American physics, the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC). Ever heard of it? Probably not because the project to build it was abandoned in 1993 after $2 billion was spent and 14 miles of tunnels were dug below the Texas soil. At the time, the need for such a massive machine was questioned.
In 2025, another ambitious project is on the brink of cancelled, but not after spending $2 billion. It’s the Traffic Coordination System for Space or TraCCS. In the 2026 budget for the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) you will find the following line item:
